Bob, you'll enjoy this excellent article about Y.B. Zeldovich, written by one of his students, summarizing all his contributions to chemistry, physics, and cosmology: all from someone with no formal university education. For example, he proposed that black holes could form at any scale, as we've possibly seen in Matsumoto's photos. https://arxiv.org/pdf/1403.1537.pdf

Excellent update - with much food for thought as ever - and it was good to finally put a name to all that white building stuff - Travertine - it certainly looks interesting, and was used by the Romans as one recipe for their concrete - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_concrete
