If people bath in the spring then there may be oils/saponins in the water that interact with the mineralisation on the rocks. I did some Moroccan plastering once and you rub an olive soap into the fresh plaster with a stone which causes a reaction with the lime. This makes it completely waterproof. It’s a bit like limescale in the bath.
Also check out Davidovits’s book - if you haven’t already - on geopolymer chemistry. There are both alkaline and acidic routes to geopolymerisation. Something that maybe worth knowing. His website has lots of speculation on geopolymers from ancient civilisations too which might be of interest.
About 6 minutes in he starts to go into the chemistry. The chemistry is not what most would expect from minerals. There are other more detailed presentations he does on the polymerisation processes but this gives a good overview.
